We live in a world where self-confidence is the phrase of the 21 century. There’s so much talk about self-confidence and how important it is. Yes, self-confidence is important. But as a Christian, do we really think we should be relying on ourselves instead of God? Absolutely not. There’s a hierarchy God wants us to follow.
So let’s look at God-confidence vs self- confidence and I’ll show you God-confidence is truly the only way to go.
Because of the way the deck was dealt me in life. It’s easy to say I lack self-confidence. I am always second guessing myself and really have a issue with trusting anyone. This makes me feel inferior. And I always compare myself to others even though I know I should not. The devil naturally like to prey on these issues in my life. While I seem fine on the outside, I struggle daily with what’s going on inside. I know Jesus forgives me, but I have a difficult forgiving myself sometimes.
My point in sharing these insecurities is that when we feel inferior our first thought is to lean on ourselves to overcome those struggles. So, should we pick up a self-help book at the bookstore to figure it out by some expert puffing us up and telling us how great we are? No way! That’s never the best way is it? By putting God first in our lives, He becomes the first one we go to when we need help.
If we look in the dictionary it gives us two definitions of self-confidence. The first is a realistic confidence in one’s own judgment, ability, and power. And the second is excessive or inflated confidence in one’s own judgment or ability. First realistic and excessive which in any event, it’s all about me!
These two definitions go completely against the grain of what God wants for us. God-confidence means depending completely on God and His strength to handle the things in your life. It’s not about our strength or confidence we have in ourselves that we put into earthly things. Having a worldly focus means putting your confidence into things like money, education, people, and appearance. Having a Godly focus means to seek those things from above. When you have to choose, choose God and His path of righteousness.
So, how do we get God-Confidence?
It starts with a relationship with Jesus. If you died tomorrow, do you know for sure that your going to heaven? The answer comes to you when you have a personal relationship with Jesus. It’s the only way to know for sure. Without it you would be merely guessing to where your soul will go at the end of your time here on earth.
