Lessons From David And Goliath

The story of David and Goliath is a super well-known Bible story, but many miss out on the true lesson it teaches.

Our trust in God should lead to action.

It can be quite easy for us to say we trust God, to think that we trust God. But how are we living that out in our action?David doesn’t just say that he trusts God. His trust led him directly to action. He didn’t just think He fought: God will help me so I will fight. In 1 Samuel 17:15, David declares to Goliath, “You come to me with a sword, and a spear, and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts.” This is a confident faith, a faith without doubts.

Sometimes faith looks foolish to the world.

When David suggested fighting against Goliath, the idea of him being able to defeat Goliath was met with laughter by those around him. They thought it was a crazy idea. Even though the people around him knew God, yet not one of them had enough faith in God to face Goliath. David’s faith seemed foolish. But David didn’t let this phase him, and we shouldn’t either.

It can be easy to think the God will only be there for us in the big battles. But God had rescued David from a lion and a bear. This part of the story gets overlooked. It is a reminder that God was there for David when no one else was watching. He had always be with David, helping him in all his battles.

Make sure your faith is bigger than your fear.

The size of our situation doesn’t matter. Nothing that we fear, no person, no conflict, no challenge is bigger than God.

The army cowered away as Goliath called to them, their fear of him had grown bigger than their trust in God, which led them to be unable to do anything. Maybe we feel able to trust God in the small things, but the struggle begins when the things we face becomes bigger or more serious.

Maybe it’s time to grow our faith. Get to know the God we serve, remind ourselves just how big He is, and that He has already won.
