“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” -Ephesians 4:30
Knowing what offend the Holy Spirit is one of the most important things for believers to understand, yet He’s often ignored. Rather than thinking about how to please God, we tend to focus on how God can please us. We actually hurt ourselves by grieving our God given Helper.
We hear a lot these days about words that easily offend. But what about words that offend God? There should be no hint of bitterness, anger, clamor, slander, or malice in what we say. We also need to consider the words we choose to hear. Paul says in Ephesians 5:6-7, “Let no one deceive you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. Therefore don’t be partakers with them.” We must be careful who we surround ourselves with because we can partake in what they are doing by default. It can be an endorsement of their lifestyle. The same is true regarding the entertainment we choose.
Words carry great weight because they reveal the condition of the heart. Luke 6:44-45 tells us, “For each tree is known by its fruit. For people don’t gather figs from thorns, nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out what is evil, for our of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.” This means wrong attitudes also grieve the Holy Spirit. If it seems like the Holy Spirit is easily offended, you are right. That’s because He’s so sensitive to sin. Our sensitivity to sin is reduced when we choose to flood our minds with things that offend a holy God -the very thing for which Jesus died.
Take some time and examine the word you use and the words you choose to hear. Do they reveal wrong attitudes, friends, or entertainment? we can measure our spiritual help by how long it takes us to repent.Keeping in mind, there’s a cost to not correcting it. First, we will be miserable. A believer cannot peacefully live in rebellion to God. Grieving the Holy Spirit also weekend our sense of direction, as well as our discernment and defense.
If living a godly life is our goal then we should surround ourselves with godly people who share that same goal. Determined to protect your mind from things that grieve the heart of God. If we are not rightly connected to the One who guides and guards us we shouldn’t don’t ignore the Holy Spirit. We need to take some time and fix it -Repent.
