Coping With Negative Feelings

Daily writing prompt
What strategies do you use to cope with negative feelings?

I lived with negative feelings most of my life. Not knowing how to cope and punishing every one me because of them. It’s not a pleasant thing to have around.

When negative feelings or thoughts start rolling in I take these straight to God. Taking my thoughts captive. 2 Corinthians 10:5 advises us to take our thoughts captive and obey Jesus, to be sure they do not dictate my actions.

I go straight to prayer, and pour my heart out to God. Philippians 4:6-7 advices us to bring our emotions, no matter how heavy to God rather than suppressing them. When we suppress our emotions it can lead to sickness.

When I’m overwhelmed I focus on the truth over my feelings. Isaiah 41:10 and Romans 5:1 tells us to look to scripture to combat feelings of fear or unworthiness.

Cultivating positivity, Philippians 4:8 instructs us to focus our minds on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. Gratitude and thanksgiving is a sure fix for negative thoughts and emotions.

Trusting in God presence. Recognizing God is our refuge, and that His strength is available when we feel weak or burdened. God speaks of this in Matthew 11:28, and Philippians 4:13.

Lastly, I manage my anger wisely. Anger can easily turn into negative feelings and emotions. Ephesians 4:26 advises us that it is possible to experience anger without sinning, the guilty feeling when we said during the “heat of the moment.” And God warns us against holding on to anger. Ephesians 4:26 says, Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on our wrath.

These are the ways I cope from negativity whether they are feelings, thoughts, or emotions.
