Do Everything Without Grumbling

“Do all things without complaining and arguing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God, without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world” -Philippians 2:14-15

Many of us wake up, set to grumble, and move through our days, murmuring about the variety of things that get in our way. We may dress it up in nicer words: “venting”, “being honest”, “getting something off our chest.” But God knows what we are doing. And if we really think about it, we often do too. Rumbling is the hum of a fallen human heart.

Grumbling is discontentment made audible. It can be a strong craving for something we do not have, when we begin to grow restless.

Philippians 4:6 tells us “In nothing, be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with Thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and your thoughts, in Messiah Yeshua.”

Even though we can’t practically verbalize prayers about everything in our lives, we can live in a way that keeps us aware of God’s constant presence and trust God to help us moment by moment.

We never have to worry about anything if we pray about it instead. That’s encouraging, but also challenging. Praying about everything and seem like way too much to manage with our limited time and energy. But living out this guidance to pray about everything is not just possible, an actual be enjoyable.

Philippians 4:6 doesn’t mean we have to pray constantly. This means that in our lives we should develop a state of mind in which we are turning everything in our lives over to God.

I think it’s important to pray about everything because from God‘s perspective, every detail in our lives matters. Everything, absolutely everything in our lives has the potential to help us learn spiritually. Even the situations that seem insignificant to us have significance in God‘s overall purpose for us.

God pays attention to everything about us. Luke 12:7 tells us that even the hairs on our head are numbered. And Psalm 139:16 proclaims that all the days ordained for us were written in God’s book before one of them came to be.

God cares about everything in our lives. So, we should care about everything. When we do, we’ll see the wisdom of welcoming God into every aspect of our lives, because we can’t live our best lives possible without Him.
