The seven spirits of God are the multifaceted work and presence of the Holy Spirit. Is connected to the sevenfold description of the Spirit in Isaiah and the symbolic imagery in Revelation.
There are seven attributes that are mentioned in Isaiah 11:2:
- The Spirit of the Lord
- The Spirit of Wisdom
- The Spirit of understanding
- The Spirit of Counsel
- The Spirit of Might (Power and strength)
- The Spirit of Knowledge
- The Spirit of the Fear of The Lord
This seven fold spirit of the Lord symbolizes, the Holy Spirit’s perfection, completeness, and multifaceted power rather than seven distinct individual spirit.
These appear in the Bible in the book of Revelation.
Revelation 1:4 – John greet the seven churches with grace and peace from God, the seven spirits before His throne, and Jesus.
“ John, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia: grace, to you and peace, from God, who is and who was and who is to come and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne.”
Revelation 3:1 – Jesus is described as having the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars.
“And to the angel of the assembly in Sardis write: ‘He who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars says these things:’ I know your works, that you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”
Revelation 4:5 – seven lamps of fire burn before God‘s throne, identified as the seven Spirits of God.
“ Out of the thrones proceed lightings, sounds, and thunders. There were seven lamps of fire burning before his throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”
Revelation 5:6 – A slaughter (slain) Lamb has seven horns and seven eyes, representing the seven Spirits of God sent into all the earth.
“ One of the elders said to me, Don’t weep. Behold, the Lion who is the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome, He who opens the book and its seven seals.”
The seven Spirits were sent by God and they rested on Jesus all His life. Luke 4:18 tells us that Jesus is telling people,
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He had anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Romans 8:12 connect the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit inside believers directly to the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
“And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through His Spirit, who is dwelling in you.”
There is immeasurable greatness of God’s power towards believers, which was worked in Jesus when God raised Him from the dead and seated Him above all rule and authority.
